School Assignment: Marc Jacobs, Oh, Lola

School Assignment
{ Week #10 - Current Designers }

by Julie Naughton
Source: WWD ISSUE 06/10/2011
Summary: Marc Jacobs will be launching later this summer, Oh, Lola.
He has been in the fragrance business since September 2001.
"I never thought when we started years ago that we'd be a big player
in the fragrance world. It seemed like, at best, we could have the name
on a bottle, but I didn't think we'd have such success and appreciation
from the public," Jacobs told WWD.
Originally, Jacobs’ scent license was held by the American Designer Fragrances
division of the LVMH-owned Parfums Givenchy and distributed in about
200 doors in the U.S. In 2003, Jacobs’ beauty license was acquired
by the Coty Prestige division of Coty Inc.
That 2003 sale to Coty has launched some of Jacobs’ biggest scents to date,
which include 2007’s Daisy, 2010’s Bang and 2009’s Lola.
The last fragrance is getting a little sister, Oh, Lola,
a play on "oh la la." She has a recolored bottle
and is a little more seductive - Sweeter.

Article: Giorgio Armani Resort 2012
by WWD.COM

Summary: Giorgio Armani has introduced two new pant styles into his
latest resort collection: "a loose version with a transversal cut on the hem
to reveal the heel, and a cigarette trouser in taffeta accessorized with a bow belt."
In this collection he has reinterpreted his iconic daywear with light touches from
the Far East, "the asymmetric cuts, the precious buttons and the gem-inspired
color palette of jade, amethyst and lapis blue."

School Assignment: Gianfranco Ferré

School Assignment
{ Week #3 - Current Designers }

(images via style.com)

by Luisa Zargani
Source: WWD - Issue 04/20/2011

Summary: Gianfranco Ferré's new owner, Paris Group, has let go of the brand's creative directors Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi.

Sources say that sales were not going well and that could have been the
reason behind dismissing the two.

An anonymous retailer was also quoted saying, "We bought a minimal
amount of the collection for the sake of carrying the brand, but
there simply were not enough samples. There was almost no daywear
and evening wear was fairy tale, like something for the Oscars.
It may work for a small, niche brand, but not for such a global brand."

Ferré's suffering sales are nothing new since the death
of their designer, Michele Giglio, in June 2007.
She was a owner of seven boutiques in Palermo, Italy,
and was a fan of Aquilano and Rimondi's work.
Michele believed that they were very talented but they had not
had their chance yet to express it due to the fact that they
were asked to revisit Ferré's archives.

"Ferré died bringing his art and hertiage with him, and it's a
mistake to continue following old patterns. Companies should have
the courage to keep the brand but do something else
and entirely different, maybe adding no more than one
or two iconic items to the collection," said Giglio.
She cited Dior as an example and what John Galliano did with
the brand before he was disgraced.

Sources believe that the company may take a season off
and have an in-house team design the men's collection that is due
to be out between May and June.
As for Aquilano and Rimondi no one is too sure but
they have had success in the past creating their own line, 6267,
which was launched in 2004 and renamed Aquilano.Rimondi in 2008.
So hopefully they will be able to pick-up and start again.

School Assignment: John Galliano

School Assignment
{ Week #2 - Current Designers }

(images via style.com)

by Miles Socha with contributions from Luisa Zargani, Kerry Olsen
Source: WWD - Issue 04/15/2011

Summary: Most are aware that Dior let head designer John Galliano go
last month after an anti-Semitic and racist outburst surfaced. He also has just been
"formally sacked from the fashion company that bears his name."

The 17-year-old firm's board just recently met and made the
decision to "eject the maverick British designer."
They have no immediate priority to sell the company, but
there are interested parties if that changes.
The current in-house design team at John Galliano will be charged
with producing collections at a house prized for bias-cut dresses,
newspaper prints and retro-tinged tailoring. A pre-spring collection
is already said to be in the works.

"Galliano is to stand trial on a charge of public insult at
the High Court, which is expected on May 12 to set the date
for the proceedings. The designer could face months in prison
and a fine of 22,500 euros ($31,271)."

By no means do I agree with Galliano on his views,
but it is a shame to see a talent go to waste.

School Assignment: new quarter, new posts

School Assignment
{ Week #1 - for Current Designers }

by Michelle Tay
Source: WWD - Footwear News  Friday April 8, 2011

Summary: Christian Louboutin SA is suing the French fashion label for trademark
infringement - "LV is alleging that YSL america Inc. is selling shoes with red soles
that are "virtually identical" to its signature styles, thereby violating
 its trademark for the footwear."
Attorneys believe that the litigation between the two parties could potentially
go on for a long time, due to the fact that both have large and skilled law firms
working for them.. they wouldn't be surprised to see this case settled outside of court.

The shoes that drew the attention was the YSL Palais pump.
It has a colored suede upper and colored soles in the identical shade.
There are 4 other colors offered: Green, Purple, Tan, and Black

"Both companies sell their shoes side by side in high-end fashion stores,
including Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman,
and Louboutin's complaint stated that the "defendants' use of a red sole on their
infringing footwear threatens to mislead the public, and has impaired
plaintiffs' ability to control their reputation."

Fact: Louboutin was awarded a registered trademark for its red sole
by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2008.

Louboutin is seeking $1 million in damages, as well as a court injunction
against YSL's sale of its shoes.

It will be interesting to see who wins
and how this will play out..

Winter Midterm work

Midterm Project

Here is just a little of my most recent school work.
I turned in my sketchbook so I'll have to wait to share my actually
fashion illustrations, but here is my theme board I put together
to create 14 flats for a contemporary clothing line.

I named my line Karly - Karl Lagerfeld/Burberry lol
and we created the line for Fall 2011
From my research all black is in, 1970's with a modern twist,
a Parisian/Bohemian vibe, and tailored looks.

My line was inspired by Alice+Olivia, and Free People.
and I can't take credit for the clothing ideas, I just drew the
technical drawings known as Flats. ((by hand))

I hope to share more with you guys.
Thank you for all your kind comments

School Assignment #2: Apparel Industry 2011

{ Locate three articles }
that characterize the direction of the apparel industry

- supply thoughts for each (brief description)
- add links or site the reference (hard copy)
- add Imagery (always a plus!)

1st Article: Fabric Firms Eye Slow Rebound
by Vicki M. Young and Marc Karimzadeh
posted Tuesday January 25, 2011
from WWD ISSUE 01/25/2011

Who: Designers, Buyers, and Exhibitors in the textile sector
Where: Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, New York
When: January 11th & 12th
What: textile shows/ Texworld USA
"Showcased resources for findings, trims, lace and embroidery, and a large group
of Indian exhibitors of embroidery, and silk and wool fabrics."

The article discussed that there is still much uncertainty if business is picking up
among the industry. Many had reason to believe that the economy is starting to lift
and the rebound will soon begin to positively impact business.
Exchange rates and the global economy are some of the current
challenges that the industry faces. Raw materials, like cotton, have doubled in price
causing concern among spinners, designers, and retailers
on how to pass the higher costs on to the consumer and whether the consumer
will pay the prices. [plus side] cotton blends have been on the rise
to alleviate the costs of yarn. There is hope that costs will settle
 in the next two years.

Who: 350 companies from within the decorated-apparel industry/ T-shirts
Where: Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California
When: January 21st-23rd
What: Imprinted Sportswear Show,
"one of the largest West Coast events for the decorated-apparel industry."

This article gave some interesting insight on "triblend" T-shirts that
made "an aggressive appearance on the show floor." They credit this to the current
rise in cotton prices. American Apparel showed a triblend V-neck that is
50% polyster, 25% cotton, and 12.5% viscose.
Others took an all-natural route to triblend with bamboo, cotton
and soybean fiber.

Who: Erin Fetherston
Where: originally from California, based in New York now
When: Debut during New York Fashion Week
What: Introducing a new contemporary line
"everyday wear, with ample ladyfied sportswear"

I choose this article due to the fact that Erin Fetherston addresses the impact
that the economy has had on the everyday-fashionista.
Erin has come to realize due to her more recent partnerships with Juicy Couture
and Target, that a lower-price line is the way to go. "I became more aware
of a large Erin Fetherston fan base that hasn't necessarily been able to
buy into the designer price point.. I don't want to leave that girl out anymore."- EF
Erin's new line will range from $73 to $250 at wholesale, and you can expect
T-shirts that are embellished with beadwork and chiffon accents,
a winter parka done in icy metallic lame and skinny black pants with
a "swath" of silk trailing in the back, like a cape.
"I still want to create unique things"- EF
Day dresses, simple tanks and blouses and a tuxedo jacket with sheer
bishop sleeves round out the collection. Can't Wait!
